ThunderBug Brings Excitement to Central City YMCA Afterschool Program
Students in the Bob Gilbertson Central City YMCA afterschool program recently received a surprise visit from one of Tampa Bay’s iconic mascots: ThunderBug of the Tampa Bay Lightning!
ThunderBug stopped as part of a community tour celebrating his recognition as the 2026 NHL Mascot of the year – his first time earning the honor. The afternoon was filled with excitement as afterschool participants had the opportunity to interact with ThunderBug, pose for photos and even shoot some hoops with him.
For many students, the visit was a unique experience that connected them to their hometown hockey team, while reinforcing the YMCA's commitment to providing engaging enrichment opportunities beyond the school day.
"Seeing the kids light up when ThunderBug walked in was such a special moment," said Alyssa Whitford. "Moments like this are what make our work so meaningful. It was wonderful to see our students having fun, feeling celebrated, and experiencing the support of their community in such a memorable way. These are the kinds of experiences that create lasting memories and remind our students that their community is cheering them on."
The surprise appearance highlighted the value of community partnerships in youth development. The Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA is the Official Home Jersey Patch Partner of the Tampa Bay Lightning, and they work together to strengthen families and improve community well-being across Tampa Bay.
Through experiences like these, YMCA afterschool program participants build confidence, strengthen social connections and enjoy opportunities that encourage curiosity and fun. The afternoon served as a reminder that learning and personal growth can happen in many ways, including through moments of joy, connection and community engagement.
As the school year continues, the Tampa Y remains committed to creating enriching experiences that help young people learn, grow and thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
