Lifeguards Compete, Train and Prepare to Save Lives at Tampa Y

On Saturday July 13th, the Tampa YMCA hosted its annual in-service lifeguard training—the Lifeguard Games, which brings together lifeguards from across the Tampa YMCA association for a day of skill-building, teamwork and spirited competition. 

While the name might suggest a playful event, the Lifeguard Games are a critical, hands-on training opportunity that reinforces essential water safety skills. In a high-energy and supportive environment, our lifeguards put their training to the test, so when real emergencies happen, they’re ready to respond with confidence and precision. From simulated rescues to first-aid scenarios, lifeguards practiced the techniques and quick decision-making required to keep our pools safe all year long. 

Congratulations to the Campo Family YMCA lifeguard team for taking home first place at this year’s Lifeguard Games! Their performance was a shining example of teamwork, preparedness and dedication to safety.

Lacey Boldman, the Aquatics Operations Director for the Tampa YMCA shares, “These in-service trainings are a vital part of the Y’s year-round commitment to water safety, because we know that a well-trained lifeguard is the first line of defense in preventing accidents and saving lives.” She adds, “Our focus on water safety in July is especially timely as we approach World Drowning Prevention Day on July 25th.” 

World Drowning Prevention Day serves as a reminder of the importance of water safety and the devastating toll that drowning takes on our community each year.
