Instructor teaches child to float in pool at the Y.

TAMPA, FL - February 13, 2024 — In the United States, drowning is a serious issue, claiming an average of 3,500-4,000 lives every year. That's an average of 10 lives lost per day. To combat this, the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA and its 11 locations are proud to offer the Safety in Water Week initiative. This free 4-day course, taking place from March 11th-14th, is specifically designed for children ages 3-12 who are beginner or non-swimmers.

During the course, certified instructors will teach children a sequenced set of skills to establish confidence in and around water, to ultimately reduce the risk of drowning.

“We are thrilled to provide this valuable opportunity for our community's youth," says Desiree Ellison, Director of Drowning Prevention at the Tampa YMCA. She adds, “The National Downing Prevention Alliance shares that 23 percent of child drownings happen during a family gathering near a pool. This course not only equips children to be safe in the water but also reinforces water safety tips to parents and guardians.”

Last year, throughout the Tampa YMCA 13,108 children learned to swim and be safe in and around the water. This is especially important considering more children under the age of four drown in Florida than anywhere else in the nation. The Y is committed to doing what it takes to ensure not one more child drowns in Tampa Bay. Studies show that formal swim lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent, making this course a crucial resource for families and opening up a world of possibilities for all!

A YMCA membership is NOT required for the Safety in Water classes; however, due to limited space, pre-registration is required. Participants must be present on the first day of class and bring their own swimsuit and towel. You can register online, in person at your local YMCA or by phone.
