Tampa YMCA Students Bring Leadership Skills to Tallahassee at Youth in Government State Assembly
For a group of Tampa YMCA students, the recent Youth in Government State Assembly in Tallahassee was more than just a trip. It was an opportunity to step inside the rooms where decisions are made, build confidence and experience leadership in action.
Students from the Tampa YMCA’s Youth in Government program participated in both the Judicial and Legislative programs during the statewide event. Throughout the assembly, students presented arguments, debated bills and collaborated with peers from across Florida while gaining firsthand experience in how state government works.
One student-led bill advanced all the way to the Senate during the assembly, highlighting the preparation, collaboration and leadership skills students developed throughout the program.
In addition to participating in mock legislative and judicial sessions, students also visited the Florida Senate, House of Representatives and Supreme Court, giving them a closer look at the real-world systems that shape communities across the state.
Tampa YMCA students were also recognized for their outstanding achievements during the State Assembly.
Moira Reddy received the Lookout Award of the Senate in recognition of outstanding achievements in the Florida YMCA Youth in Government State Assembly.
Ansley Bruce received the Best Memo Respondent of the District Court of Appeals in recognition of outstanding achievements in the Florida YMCA Youth in Government State Assembly.
Programs like Youth in Government help students strengthen leadership, communication and critical thinking skills while encouraging civic engagement and confidence both inside and outside the classroom.
The Tampa YMCA is proud to continue providing opportunities that empower young leaders and inspire students to find their voice.
High school students interested in joining Youth in Government next school year can participate through the South Tampa Family YMCA, Campo Family YMCA and Spurlino Family YMCA chapters.
