Small Changes that Help Prevent Type 2 Diabetes
November is National Diabetes Month, with November 14th designated as World Diabetes Day. This observance serves as a crucial reminder of the growing impact diabetes has on our community and highlights the important role that prevention, education and support play in helping individuals lead healthier, more fulfilled lives.
This year, our Tampa YMCA centers came together to raise awareness for the growing number of people who are of working age and have diabetes. Members were encouraged to wear blue, the official color of diabetes awareness, and join a group exercise class designed to promote cardiovascular health, strength building and flexibility. These three components are proven to support healthy blood sugar management.
Throughout the day, our wellness teams spoke with members about the warning signs of prediabetes and the importance of preventive lifestyle changes such as increased physical activity, balanced eating habits and stress reduction strategies.
Members also received blue awareness ribbons to wear in support and were invited to enter a raffle for the chance to win a free enrollment in the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program, an evidence-based lifestyle program that helps participants reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by improving nutrition, increasing physical activity and building long-term healthy habits.
The need for awareness is greater than ever. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 38 million Americans are living with diabetes, and an estimated 96 million adults are living with prediabetes, many without knowing it. Without intervention, up to 30% of individuals with prediabetes will develop type 2 diabetes within five years.
“This month gives us the opportunity to remind our community that prevention matters and support is available,” said Dawn Kita, Operations Director, Community Health at the Tampa YMCA. “Small, realistic lifestyle changes can make a significant difference in long-term health. Our goal is to meet individuals where they are, provide encouragement and walk alongside them on their wellness journey.”
