In celebration of Earth Day—recognized globally on April 22—our YMCA Teen Achievers were invited to participate in a special behind-the-scenes experience at the Florida Aquarium. This exclusive opportunity included an engaging panel discussion featuring Aquarium professionals who shared valuable insights into their unique career paths, skills and experiences that led them to their current roles.

From marine biologists, animal care specialists, engineers and catering and events, each panelist offered a glimpse into the dynamic and rewarding careers at the Aquarium. Their stories inspired our teens to think broadly about their futures and imagine new career paths.

Keith Whitehead, Children’s Board Program Director at our YMCA Sulphur Springs PK-8 Community Partnership School, shared, “This is a great opportunity for our teens. With several of our seniors preparing to graduate, we’re excited for them to be exposed to diverse career paths and connect with professionals who lead in their fields and reflect their backgrounds and experiences. Representation matters, and experiences like this help our teens envision what’s possible for their futures.”

After the panel, students had the rare opportunity to go behind the scenes, exploring areas typically closed to the public. They observed how the Aquarium’s staff manage the care and feeding of marine life, learned about water quality testing and witnessed firsthand the operations that keep the facility running smoothly.

We are incredibly grateful to the Florida Aquarium for opening their doors and providing an inspiring and educational experience for our Teen Achievers. Opportunities like this are made possible through the generosity of our local partners and donors, whose continued support helps us empower the next generation with real-world exposure and meaningful connections. Together, we are shaping brighter futures and showing our teens that anything is possible with curiosity, determination and community support!
