New Challenge Course Opens at Camp Cristina
It’s August, and as summer came to a close at Camp Cristina, an exciting new addition prepares for countless seasons of adventure to come.
On Wednesday, August 12th, campers crossed the field between activities, stopping to inspect the commotion surrounding a new structure towering at its center. Everyone was sweating, partly from the Florida heat, but mostly from excitement at the unveiling of Camp Cristina’s newest Challenge Course.
Two young campers – Connor and Mackenzie – clipped in and began the inaugural climb.
As they scaled the climbing wall, it became clear that the structure represented much more than recreation. It reflected years of planning, generosity and a shared community vision.
“We’re excited to offer an experience that gives participants and visitors an equitable opportunity to challenge themselves, work together and make lasting memories. It’s a meaningful investment in our community and another way we’re bringing people together while supporting youth development,” says Camp Cristina Executive Director Ryan Novo.
The new Challenge Course features a climbing wall, a high ropes course for individual and group challenges and a zip line. The project had been a vision for Camp Cristina for many years, with the goal of not only replacing the previous structure but elevating the Camp Cristina experience for generations to come. Led by Tampa YMCA COO Bob Moss, the initiative joined a rich tradition of team-building programs at Camp Cristina.
With the new course in place, campers will have even more opportunities to build confidence, develop resilience and discover the power of teamwork.
The project would not have been possible without the support of the community. Support from the Spurlino Foundation helped transform the new Challenge Course from blueprint to reality.
Then they reached the top.
The crowd cheered as Connor and Mackenzie unfurled a banner from the summit. For a moment, everyone could see the words “Thank You.” Then the banner slipped free, caught the wind and floated away. Laughter spread through the crowd.
Community. Gratitude. That’s what this project was about. That’s what this Course represents.
Every climber who reaches the top will carry away more than just a view. They’ll gain confidence, courage and a reminder that when a community invests in its young people, new heights become possible for everyone.
