Providing kids the things they need to succeed in education.

The Tampa YMCA’s Community Learning Center (CLC) provides year round enhancement and support to children who are enrolled in grades K-5th at Sulphur Springs Elementary School. We strive to avoid summer learning loss and to close the achievement gap between low-income and middle/high-income students through a number of programming opportunities. Through our program, we strive to ensure that our kids are ready to learn by Kindergarten and “reading to learn” by third grade. During programming hours we allow for self guided academic curriculum centers to promote independence and good decision making while allowing for personal choice and self motivation. In addition, we provide small group and one– one tutoring sessions to identify and enhance individual areas of weakness. Our curriculum specialist provides common core based curriculum for students heavily focusing on improving reading scores and furthering classroom lessons. The CLC program also offers the YMCA READS! Program for 1st-3rd grade students to provide further support with enhancing literacy within our participants.

While our program’s primary focus is to further the academic development of our participants, we also pride ourselves on our ability to provide disguised learning programs and activities through enrichment clubs. Our participants are allotted the opportunity to participate in enrichments clubs such as chess, dance, cheerleading, extreme sports, drama, music and step. In addition we have a number of partners that offer additional extra-curricular activities that contributes to our goal of fully developing our participants. Through our enrichment clubs and activities, we are able to provide quality out-of-school time that supports academic success while also improving self esteem and promoting individual growth. We track our participants engagement and behavior throughout each programming day with our Positive Behavior Support (PBS) model. The PBS model is proven to improve social skills and parent engagement with our participants.

Preventing chronic disease, specific to childhood obesity.

Within our program we implement the 5-2-1-Almost None curriculum and abide by the Healthy eating and Physical Activity (H.E.P.A.) standards. Our program participants participant in healthy eating activities and follow a healthy eating curriculum. During program hours our participants receive healthy snacks, 30/ 60 minutes of strenuous physical activity a day and are encouraged to drink water throughout program.

Revitalizing neighborhoods and reducing generational poverty through education in Sulphur Springs.

We continue the Tampa YMCA’s B.E.S.T. “Neighboring” program by promoting parent/resident engagement through events and volunteer opportunities. Our “Dinner & Dialogue” events, family socials, Parent Cafes, and book seminars are held at the school to encourage parent and family involvement. We hope to reach our families through our children, and to make a difference in our children’s lives with the help of our families.
