Y Role Model Making Waves

One of our own is making waves across the nation. Tampa Y Director of Competitive Swimming John Bruenning is being recognized locally and nationally for developing better athletes while building their character.

During a recent home game, the Tampa Bay Lightning honored John as its Coach of the Month presented by Tampa Electric’s Zap Cap systems. John is recognized for serving as a role model of fair play and sportsmanship, inspiring and motivating the Tampa YMCA Stingrays and making a continuous effort to improve his coaching skills. In addition to free tickets to a home Lightning game and a personalized jersey, John received $1,000 donation to the charity of his choice. He generously donated the dollars to Tidewell Hospice which cared for his late mother.

The Lightning recognition comes at the same time John’s been named a Tampa Bay Double-Goal Coach Chapter Winner from Positive Coaching Alliance. The award is given to youth and high school sports coaches throughout the U.S. who embody the ideals of striving to win, while also teaching life lessons through sports. To top it off, John is among 150 Double-Goal Coach National Finalists.

John served as team captain and was MVP of the University of South Carolina Men’s Swim Team three years in a row. As an assistant coach at George Washington University, John helped the team earn 23 conference titles and break 12 school records. Next as head site coach, John helped the Sarasota YMCA Sharks grow to over 100 swimmers and implemented long-term athlete development programs. Before John came to the Tampa Y, he served as head coach for STAR Aquatics in North Carolina, where he coached six athletes to qualify for the 2012 US Olympic Trials.

John invites young swimmers to come try-out at the New Tampa, Campo and Bob Sierra Ys offering the following swim programs:

  • Developmental swim team (pre-competitive, ages 6-12)
  • Competitive swim team (YMCA, Regional & USA Meets, ages 8-18)
  • Synchronized swimming (New Tampa Y only)

And you don’t have to be a pro to swim at the Y. Swim lesson season starts March 19th for all ages. The Tampa Y is extremely fortunate to have John on our staff – teaching kids to reach their full potential in and out of the pool. Congratulations, John, and thank you for your leadership, passion and sportsmanship!
