A Day On, Not a Day Off

Instead of taking the day off to play video games or watch television, Y Teen Achievers spent their Martin Luther King Jr. holiday volunteering to give back. On January 16th, 75 teens participated in several special service projects across the community.

Y Teen Achievers from Blake High School filmed interviews with SilverSneakers® members at the YMCA of the Suncoast to create a living biography. Y students from East Pasco Middle School also conducted two beach restoration projects over the holiday weekend.

“The Tampa YMCA and the Teen Achievers Service Project remain committed to the legacy of the MLK Day of Service and intend to continue participating in community service opportunities throughout the year,” says Senior Program Director Wayne Johnson. “This will entail a year of service honoring Dr. King’s legacy and provide valuable assistance to the community.”

Thanks to the Florida Legislature, St. Petersburg College and the MLK Advisory Committee. Your generosity made the 5th annual MLK Day of Service a memorable one for our youth!
