Download A Community Call to Action to Address Childhood Obesity in Sulphur Springs

Who we are

Creating a Healthier Sulphur Springs for Kids (CHSSK) is a network of people working together to improve the health of children in our community. This group, which includes residents, service providers, government officials, and university partners, began in 2010 when the YMCA received an Embrace a Healthy Florida grant from the Florida Blue Foundation (formerly the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida Foundation). Since our neighbourhood is above the state and national averages for overweight and obese children, our goal is to promote healthy living in Sulphur Springs and reduce the number of overweight and obese children in our community.

What we have done
This collaborative process resulted in a partnership with the Sulphur Springs Action League Neighbourhood Association to conduct a door-to-door community survey and community forum, which provided the framework for the CHSSK coalition and the Community Call To Action. Over 240 resident responses were also used to create five advisory working groups that are responsible for addressing issues most important to the community.

The work groups created were:

  • Food and Nutrition
    • Goal: Increasing healthy food options in the community
  • Community Outreach
    • Goal: Increasing opportunities for resident engagement
  • Safety, Access and Community Pride
    • Goal: Improving neighborhood health & safety
  • Healthy Living
    • Goal: Promoting community health education & ensuring a medical home for children and families
  • Child Care, Youth and Families
    • Goal: Increasing healthy eating and active living for children and families
By talking to people who live, work, and play in Sulphur Springs, these work groups have identified what is needed to improve the health of our community. Some groups talked to residents, others talked to service providers and one group even talked to doctors, nurses and health educators that work in our neighborhood.
We also have several mini-grant recipients who are providing services in the Sulphur Springs centered around the above mentioned focus areas.

Next Steps

Building on the groundwork established during the first years, we are working toward accomplishing our goal through developing programs and advocating for policy changes to Create a Healthier Sulphur Springs for Kids.

Florida Blue and Sweet Tomatoes were our partners in this event celebrating over 8 years serving the Sulphur Springs community. This year’s luncheon highlighted partners, projects and stories from students and community members. We were thrilled to honor Sheff Crowder’s contributions to the Sulphur Springs K-8 Community School, the Y and the entire community with the 2017 Sulphur Springs YMCA Changemaker award.

Your involvement makes a difference in the lives of the children we serve. Thank you for your support of those efforts. For more information on how to get involved, please contact Lisa Mitchell at Lisa.Mitchell@tampaymca.org
