Thirteen-year-old Macie White has tried it all - swim team, t-ball, soccer and basketball. Nothing seemed to “fit,” says her mom, Jennifer Robles. That’s until Macie gave volleyball a try at the New Tampa Family YMCA.   “After only two weeks, Macie looked to me after her first game and said ‘Mom, I think this is it, I’ve found my sport.’ Music to a mom’s ears,” Jennifer says. “Finally!”   Jennifer attributes her daughter’s love of the game to Coach Mike Torres, a volunteer. “Macie has struggled with confidence and self-esteem ever since starting middle school last year,” Jennifer says. “Upon joining the team Coach Mike taught her and the entire team so any things - confidence, teamwork, strategy, collaboration, just to name a few.”   The game has taught Macie, “a little enthusiasm goes a long way.” She explains what she loves best about volleyball. “No matter win or lose, it’s all about having fun with my teammates and coach,” Macie says.     “Coach Mike taught the team to celebrate one another no matter what,” Jennifer says. “High fives after every play, “way to go,” “you’ve got this,” “next time,”  “awesome serve.”   It seems fitting that the name of the team is called the Warriors. “She walks a little taller and with her head held higher,” says Jennifer. “Confidence is what this season has given Macie and that is priceless.”   Playing sports at the Tampa Y is fun for everyone! Kids can choose from soccer, basketball, golf, volleyball and more. No matter which sport they get involved with, they will learn the basics of good sportsmanship and healthy competition…along with the Y’s core values of respect, responsibility, honesty and caring.
