When Teresa Schefer noticed her daughter, Isabella, struggled with reading, she sought help from the Y. “She is in 2nd grade and we know the importance of being able to read on grade level by 3rd grade,” explains Youth Development Director James Dineen.   At the Bob Sierra Y Youth and Family Center, James sits with Isabella during Y Success Afterschool twice a week to practice phonetically sounding out words. “You can really see how hard she is trying,” observes James. “She is starting to slow down and sound out words she struggles with. She has improved with some sight words as well. I am very proud of her.”   Teresa notices a difference at home too. “I want to say a big ‘thanks’ to all at the YMCA for the exceptional care of our daughter,” testifies Teresa, “Not only does she have fun, but it is apparent that James Dineen has helped her tremendously with her reading.”   It’s not all about reading and homework though – Y Success Afterschool is also fun! “We couldn’t be happier with all the extra activities she is involved at the afterschool program including gymnastics and swimming,” says Teresa. “The great educational events keep her motivated, learning and looking forward to going to the Y every day. She always has a big smile on her face when I pick her up.”   The Tampa Y offers afterschool programs that serve thousands of children, like Isabella, in Hillsborough County. Available for children in grades K-5, Y Success Afterschool provides a safe and healthy place to learn foundational skills, develop healthy, trusting relationships and build self-reliance.
