What is the Foster Home Recruitment Project?

The Tampa Metro YMCA, as part of its mission to build stronger kids, stronger families and a stronger community has agreed to assist Hillsborough Kids, Inc. in finding caring foster homes during the current foster home crisis. Hillsborough Kids, Inc. is responsible for 5,000 children in the foster care system and there are just not enough foster parents to meet the need. Some must stay in temporary placements due to the lack of caring foster parents. Becoming a foster parent can make a difference in a child’s life.

Why the YMCA?

The YMCA has 30,000 families who are members and from this committed group we hope there are a significant number of families who would be foster parents if they understood the need and the rewards. Becoming a foster parent is one of the ways YMCA members can not only help a child but build a better community. Already, the YMCA provides scholarships to any foster child in Hillsborough County as foster children and helping them live a better life is a special YMCA mission.

Who can be a foster parent?

Like foster children, foster parents come from different backgrounds and situations. You can be a couple (married at least 2 years) and individual or a family with children.

How can you learn more about being a foster parent?

Please call our Foster Home Recruitment Coordinator, Heather Cazzola at 684-1371 to have your questions answered. You will also be invited to attend an Orientation meeting at your local YMCA where questions will be answered and you will have an opportunity to talk to a foster parent.

What will the process be like after orientation?

After the Orientation meeting, you can take the next step which will be attending a 30-hour MAPP training held in your branch at a convenient time.

What is MAPP?

MAPP or Model Approach to Partnerships in Parenting (MAPP) is a legislatively mandated training for foster parents. Its goal is to help you learn more about foster child, their special needs, and what it is like to be a foster parent. Usually a foster parent acts as a co facilitator and you have the opportunity to learn directly from someone with experience.

What happens after MAPP training?

After MAPP training, the YMCA will connect you to the appropriate agency to complete the study/licensing process which includes 2 home visits, a background check, and completion of any other licensing/safety procedures required by law.
