Thanks to a great partnership with the Y's Afterschool Program and physical education teachers Robin Hilgenberg and Anne Smith, Caminiti Exceptional Center was one of six Florida schools to win the Governor's Wellness Challenge! To participate, schools produced short DVD's to highlight how fitness and healthy lifestyles were promoted and Caminiti rose to the top with a film produced by Y staff member Lauren Koppel. The DVD not only demonstrated the Caminiti's physical education strategies during the school day, complete with nine highly engaged students lifting weights and exercising, but demonstrated the role of the Y's afterschool team in getting students outside for even more physical activity. Along with the recognition, Caminiti Exceptional Center will receive $2,500 to purchase fitness equipment for the school.
